The most ancient and silliest of wizard sports and the most recently awesome and silliest of muggle sports.

With a heart that is currently undergoing conflicting emotions, we would like call attention to Nick Candido, this year’s President and Richmond’s first 4-year player, and Billy Rothert, ninja-turned-beater-and-snitch. Congratulations to you two and as well as VCU’s seniors Haley, Katryna, Scott, and Ashleigh, all of whom graduated this past weekend. You’ll be missed muchly, but we promise to keep the RVAQuidSwag rolling.

We’re all eagerly awaiting the official reports to link, in the meantime here is a teaser photo. Our subs getting ready for brooms down in the April final. Because it’s not NQS unless we’re engulfed in a giant hug <3

Meet STONY DICROD: The Lost Boys who found each other.  Steve DiCarlo needs no introduction.  Also known as “The Golden Snitchy,” Steve runs the second most famous quidditch blog on Tumblr.  Together, he and Tony Rodriguez helped the Lost Boys bromance their way from the middle tier of Western teams to being a snitch-snatch away from reaching the Final Four at World Cup VI.  In their spare time, the real life incarnates of George and Lennie (Of Mice and Men) enjoy giving the DICROD to Disney Land, collecting Marvel action figures, swindling desserts from McDonalds, and fighting off small children for food at their local Hometown Buffet.  Even though they argue like an old married couple, these two have, allegedly, never gone farther with each other than sharing an air mattress at the Cinco de Mayo Cup — without cuddling.  Is this relationship truly platonic?  Or will we be seeing an article titled: “Son of a Pitch! I’m in Love With My Best Friend!” in the near future?

Survey Says…

iqastaff:

The development department has a few projects on which we are seeking input.image

The Title 9 3/4 team has a survey to gauge interest, involvement, and knowledge of the team’s ideology, projects, and issues of gender equality in the league. The Title 9 3/4 survey can be accessed via this link.

The kidditch team has a survey about what youth quidditch events teams across the league have hosted or participated in, to determine what resources may be most useful, and what experiences teams have had. The kidditch survey can be accessed via this link.

The literacy team has a survey about the IQA’s recent partnership with the Harry Potter Alliance on the Accio Books! book drive campaign. Whether your team participated in the drive or not, please take a few moments to complete some questions about the program. The literacy survey can be accessed via this link.

Each survey should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete, and your responses will help our department to best serve the needs of the quidditch community. Please feel free to contact me at sarah.woolsey@internationalquidditch.org with any questions or comments. We greatly appreciate your support, and we thank you for your time and your dedication to quidditch!

Red, Yellow, Green, And Snitch Grab

quidditchplaybook:

So you’re in the heat of a match.  You’re playing seeker and arriving back at the pitch.  Lets say the snitch is wide open for a grab but what is the best case senario for your team?  Do you grab it and potentially win the game or do you wait and fend off the other seeker to gain a better lead?

In some cases it is hard to tell who is winning and unless your team has a clear communication about the score, the seeker may not know what to do.  Another factor in this could be your team on the sidelines yelling at you to do something, sometimes these opinions are not congruent with each other.

In order to eliminate this confusion I offer this as a suggestion.  Cards, special cards.  When the seekers approach the pitch the captain would only have to hold up a card to clarify a strategy.  These cards would be color coordinated to mean different things to the seekers.

  • A red card= Don’t catch the snitch we are down
  • A yellow card= If you catch it it will end in a tie
  • A green card= Catch the snitch we are ahead

These card not only give the seeker a clue as to how approach a snitch but also it allows the team to focus on the scoring game.  There have been quite a few times where I have seen play slow down because the seeker was on the field and the other players were trying to communicate what to do.  By having these cards the players need to only focus on their own job.  This will also allow from less outbursts from the sidelines.

The only time I would allow an outburst from the sideline using this strategy would be if you wanted your seeker to go for a suicide grab.  While I have never seen a card for that it is easy to create a single for this with a different color.

That’s my two cents anyway.

Pool Play Defense

takingmytalentstoquidditch:

So let’s talk about what teams did the best at the World Cup in terms of quaffle points allowed per game. Now note before reading the following statistics, each team played different teams so I am not going to say one team is better defensively than another based on how well they did in pool play. Most teams played different levels of competition due to each pool being so diverse. Therefore, saying that one team is better defensively on pool play alone is silly and not the point of this article. I’m simply going to show which teams were the best in each pool defensively by stating their average quaffle points against per game in order of best to worst for each pool. Also, I included the overall qpapg after the pool play qpapg for the top 36 teams to show a team’s overall performance for those who are curious.

1- Fleming forfeited their final game against Texas A&M skewing the data for both teams.

2- Rochester and Oklahoma State’s game was contested and the score was not officially counted, once again skewing the data for both teams.

Honestly? I was excited to play Quidditch in the Fall and meet new people who have the same interests as me. Even getting back on tumblr I was curious to see who played Quidditch and who I could make friends with. At first I was overwhelmed with excitement but the more blogs I followed and the more I learned…I’m not so excited anymore. I’m actually a little scared. And honestly the people I’ve seen on tumblr are the reason why I’m not sure if Quidditch it for me. I’ve seen really mean and almost offensive posts regarding sportsmanship and women players and I didn’t like what I saw. Quidditch is a sport, yeah, but it’s supposed to be fun! It’s from Harry Potter, HELLO! Instead of being excited to get out and play, now I’m scared of being judged on my size and athletic ability and possibly targeted and talked about negatively. That’s not cool. I don’t really know who to “blame” for it all. I know some people take sports more seriously but then maybe you should find a different sport to play. If it’s about the trash talk and if you’re scheming to make people feel less of themselves so your team can win then that’s not really what Quidditch is all about. It’s about coming together in love of Harry Potter and the magic of it all. It’s about doing something and keeping active WITHOUT all of the drama that normal sports bring to the table. If I wanted all of that then I would play a regular sport. I though Quidditch would be different…but now I’m not so sure. And that makes me the saddest of all.

Harry Potter fans in Southampton play first Quidditch match

mybelovedmonsters:

A game of Quidditch in progress

Harry Potter fans dodged “bludgers” and “chased the snitch” as Hampshire’s only Quidditch club played its first match earlier.

The sport from JK Rowling’s books has been adapted for “muggles” - non-magical people - to play.

The object of the game is to throw a ball through three hoops guarded by opponents and catch the snitch - which is represented by a person in yellow.

Southampton Quidditch Club beat Reading University team Reading Rocs 120-10.

Sarah Dorricott, Southampton’s captain, said she used social media to gather players, mostly students, for the new team after seeing Quidditch played in Oxford last year.

Two players try to grab a tag from the clothes of a man dressed in yellow

Bruises guaranteed

The game is played by mixed teams of seven people carrying broomsticks between their legs, and includes “beaters”, whose job it is to throw balls at other players.

The person acting as the snitch - a winged ball in the Harry Potter books - carries a tag and each team has a “seeker” who can score 30 points and end the game by grabbing it. In the books the snitch is worth 150 points.

Sophie Macfadyen, of Reading Rocs, said Quidditch was “full contact” and could be very physical.

“There’s always going to be some bruises,” she added.

Britain has at least 20 Quidditch teams and there are more than 300 worldwide, many of them in America, which has hosted international competitions.
